Vintage Cartoons

Take a step back into the past with these vintage cartoons – capturing an era when aircraft looked like art, cars had genuine character, and ocean liners competed for national prestige as much as passenger numbers.

My Fascination With This Era

I’ve always been fascinated by this era. Whether it’s the marvellous ocean liners competing for the Blue Riband (I really must get around to doing a transatlantic crossing myself sometime), or the brave souls attempting to break the Land Speed Record on Daytona Beach in Florida, there’s something about the glamour and daring of the 1930s and 40s that’s always captured my imagination. I also grew up with a love of flying machines from this period, thanks to my older brother’s fascination with the subject rubbing off on me.

Vintage Aircraft

If you’re a fan of vintage warbirds or classic airliners, vintage cartoons featuring the ever-popular Supermarine Spitfire and DC-3 Dakota capture aircraft that defined an era of aviation history, each with their own devoted following decades after they last flew operationally.

Classic Cars and Motorcycles

For those who prefer to stay more grounded, there are popular sports cars from yesteryear, such as the MG, or the BSAs which provided sterling service for the WRENs and other servicewomen during wartime.

The 1930s and 40s produced some genuinely beautiful cars. MGs from this era had real character, built for drivers who wanted style alongside performance. Bentleys and Alvis models offered British elegance for those with deeper pockets, while sporting drivers might have favoured a nimble Riley or an SS Jaguar. These weren’t just modes of transport – they were statements, each with distinct personality that’s largely vanished from modern motoring.

The WRENs – members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service – took on vital roles during the Second World War, freeing up men for active service at sea. Many WRENs worked as dispatch riders, navigating Britain’s roads on BSA motorcycles to deliver urgent messages and documents between naval bases, often in difficult conditions and at all hours. It’s a wonderful piece of history that doesn’t get nearly enough recognition – proof that motorcycling wasn’t solely a man’s pursuit even in the 1940s.

Golden Age Ocean Liners

And if you’re drawn to the romance of the golden age of transatlantic liners, there’s the marvel of the SS Normandie and other magnificent ships that graced the ocean and competed for national glory, each crossing a statement of engineering prowess and national pride.
