Case study: Geoff Hill – Club Alpine Renault

The Challenge

I met Geoff Hill at the NEC Classic Show in November 2023. His Club Alpine committee had been looking for a gift for Peter Whitehouse, a highly respected member who had served as club secretary for over 30 years. They wanted something truly special that would honor both Peter’s dedication to the club and his love of Alpine cars.

Client: Geoff Hill, Club Alpine
Project: Custom automotive cartoon as a club appreciation gift
Timeline: 4 weeks
Deliverable: Digital artwork for printing and framing

The Creative Solution

After gathering background information from Geoff, and a brief chat, I learned about Peter’s beloved Alpine and his friendship with Milton, a fellow enthusiast who had sadly passed away. This personal history became the foundation for a touching tribute cartoon.

I created a scene featuring Peter and Milton together in Peter’s blue Alpine, in a pond, but maintaining their sense of humor with the caption “WELL AT LEAST MILTON WE AVOIDED THE SHEEP…” The setting captures the kind of driving adventure longtime club members share, along with a nod to rallying which Alpine used to be highly successful in.

The cartoon is filled with charming details – various ducks enjoying the pond, stormy skies, and sheep safely grazing on higher ground – creating a complete narrative that club members would instantly recognize and appreciate.

The Process

Initial Contact: Met Geoff at NEC Classic Show
Brief Development: Gathered historical information about Peter, Milton, and the Alpine
Concept Creation: Developed pond scene
Design Execution: Created detailed cartoon with Peter’s actual car and meaningful references
Delivery: Supplied high-resolution digital artwork, which Geoff had professionally framed

The Result

The cartoon was a resounding success! Peter was deeply moved by the thoughtful gift, saying he would “treasure” the finished artwork. The committee achieved their goal of finding something truly special to honor their long-serving member.

Client Feedback:
“The recipient says he will ‘treasure’ the finished article. The words ‘just brilliant’ come to mind and all done in good time and good humour but with professionalism. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Rob’s work.” – Geoff Hill, Club Alpine

Why This Project Worked

Personal History: Incorporated Peter’s late friend Milton, creating an emotional connection
Club Knowledge: Referenced local driving conditions that members would recognize
Authentic Details: Featured Peter’s actual Alpine rather than a generic car
Meaningful Humor: The caption reflected the kind of good-natured banter longtime club members share
Community Recognition: Perfect vehicle for acknowledging 30+ years of dedicated service

This project demonstrates how a custom cartoon can serve as more than just artwork – it becomes a lasting tribute that captures relationships, memories, and the shared experiences that bind automotive communities together.
